15 ROOM WITH A VIEW Use ornaments crafted from
bright-color papers, to cheer up
a dull winter view. Cut oversize
ornament shapes from poster
board. Decorate the fronts with
patterned scrapbooking papers,
gluing them in place. Punch a hole
at the top and hang the ornaments
from red cording or yarn taped
to the top of the window frame.
Finish off the display by hanging a
“valance” of greenery.
16 SCRAP HAPP Y Turn strips cut from felt, dishcloths,
or fabric remnants into a colorful
striped wreath. Overlap varying
widths of strips around a foam
wreath. Pin the ends to the back of
the wreath. If desired, adorn with
felt leaves and berries. Hang from
a ribbon.
17 EN TRY POIN TS Make a good first impression by
focusing on the front entry. Display
greeting cards in a bowl, or on
a wire display rack or pinboard
propped against or hung on the
wall. Pop in a small undecorated
potted tree and an assortment of
wrapped packages.
18Place photos of Christmases past
in a bowl on your coffee
table for friends and family
members to peruse.
19“Buy scrap branches from a tree lot or home
center. I can usually get a
big bundle of cut branches
for about $5. Put them in
vases and glasses all over
the house. Hang a few
ornaments from some,
add lights to others—and
maybe hang small cookie
cutters from another for an
arrangement in the kitchen.”
20 S TOCKING S TUFFER Tuck silverware into small
stockings to create festive place
settings. Any petite store-bought
stockings will work. Or make your
own by drawing a basic stocking
shape—about 7 inches tall—and
using the pattern to cut stockings
from scrap fabrics. Glue or sew the
sides together. Have extra time?
Cross-stitch or embroider a design
on front.
21WINDOW DRESSING Make a window pretty as a
package by crisscrossing ribbon—
such as a thin white ribbon layered
over a wide red one—across a
window. Tack or tape the folded
ribbon ends to the window frame.
To add a joyful sentiment, adhere
decorative wooden letters with
double-stick tape. Underscore the
sweet effect by lining the windowsill
with candy-filled glass jars.
